One of many Stelai or gravestones of the late Classical/early Hellenistic necropolis of the Dorian city of Tauric Chersonesos (4th/3rd centuries BCE) |
| - |
Most of the stelai in the collection were found in the core of the Tower of Zeno during excavations in 1960/61 |
| - |
The fragments had been reused as building material - they were neatly cut into convenient sizes |
| - |
Toolmarks visible on these limestone stelai help to associate them with
different workshops |
| - |
The gravestones are different from other Greek funerary monuments of this period. For example, the preservation of the painted decoration is very rare among Greek gravestones. |
