Online Collections
There are many museums and other organizations now making all or part of their collections available online. Most use some kind of searchable database, and include photographs of the material. In many cases, only a single photograph of a 3 Dimensional object is provided. This is a short listing of interesting sites showcasing online collections. |

Collection highlights from the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum. The online collection is organized by gallery with 50 works included for each gallery. Check out the zoom capability available for the images. Also note how the top page for each collection includes a map showing where the gallery is within the museum. The site also supports a "My Met Gallery" feature where, after free registration, users can select their favorite pieces and keep their own gallery they can look at and add to anytime. |

The British Museum website offers the Compass database of over 5000 objects from their collections. You can use a search page, or take several pre-organized thematic tours. Each image can be enlarged. |

The Prints and Photographs online collection of the Library of Congress. This is a huge collection of photographs available for viewing. Copies of many of the images can be purchased. Additionally, information on photographic rights can be found here. |

The Getty Museum website. Here you can find online exhibitions including photographs and some audio and video clips. There is also an "Explore Art" section organized with many possible ways to search for things. There is also an extensive "conservation" section with many materials available as well as details of current and past projects in conservation research. |

A project of The Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage in Egypt, this site shows artifacts, temples, and other information about Egypt's past. Multimedia is used heavily including zoomable images, animations, 3D models and virtual reconstructions. Material is organized in a variety of ways, making it fun to explore. The site uses Shockwave heavily. |
